Interdependence places responsibility on entire cultures rather than on individuals. It is something that is lacking in the United States where we allow our neighbors to go hungry, become victims of state violence, and be silenced by more powerful people. And, interdependence is probably better for our kids too.
The push for independence is what leads parents to refuse to take forgotten lunches to school and lock children in their rooms until they clean up all on their own. Are we putting value on the wrong thing? And, what of autonomy? Autonomy imbues children with power. It is the authority behind self-determined decisions, including how we choose to respond to difficult situations.
Everyone reading this certainly wants their children to learn to do things for themselves, but on whose schedule? These are some of the many questions I have asked myself over these past weeks. I try to leave decisions in their hands as much as I can without slipping into parentification. For instance, no one in my home is required or expected to clean alone. We all pitch in and the children learn through team involvement. We believe that our children will develop in their own time when given opportunities to try new things.
If we never give the kids a chance to do something on their own, how will they ever know if they can do it? By the same token, if we force the kids to do something new, what are they learning from our coercion?
It requires deep respect for children and a willingness to actually listen. Not just hear our kids, but listen to what they are communicating in words or in behavior. We ask a series of questions to get clients there: 1 What does your individual group create? In other words, what are your routine outputs?
Who then needs or consumes those outputs? Those are your customers. So, for example, if you work in Finance and one of the things you routinely produce are budgets for division heads, then those division heads are one of your customer groups.
For many of our clients, we help develop internal customer personas that they reflect on and revise every six months or so. Next, classify those customers by their needs. We recently worked with a marketing shared service and when we did this exercise, we ended up freeing up a ton of resources and alleviated enormous frustrations when we aligned everyone on the team that customer X just wanted a fast-food drive-thru they order off a menu and get served quickly and customer Y wanted a strategic thought partner.
Knowing this allowed the team to use their resources more effectively and they stopped trying so hard to change customer X. Then, simplify and automate all the routine tasks you can. If these tasks are consuming too much of your time to achieve mastery or autonomy, then you have to automate them.
HR as a discipline has made huge strides in the last decade with more and more access to automated systems. Lastly, obsess over your shared values.
To function, values have to be more than platitudes. They must encode the choices and tradeoffs you are willing to make when things are difficult and resources are scarce. Having the conversation is the hardest part. Published February 6, Unlike in the case of independence, individuals have the power, rather than freedom, to make his own desicions.
The word autonomy is also used in the context of states or regions to highlight that they are self-governed. This explains that such countries experience a certain power to set their rules and regulations. Independence is the state of not being dependent on another. The adjective of independence is independent. More than any other element, independence stresses this need to be free and not be influenced or dependent on others.
Look at the following examples. The people rejoiced at gaining their independence after so many years of suffering. In the examples presented above, the idea of independence highlights the freedom of the individual or group.
Unlike in the case of autonomy, more focus is on the freedom to choose and live in whatever manner that pleases the individual without much attention to rules. Independent also highlights having enough money to support oneself. Independent is also used as a noun to refer to a person who is independent or else to a person who votes with a freely without any affiliations. After the waves of decolonization, many states have now become independent.
