We did give the occasional rusk -maybe 1 or 2 a week - for the first few months of weaning as we were concerned about getting enough iron into him. But you don't need to mush them. Just break off sections that they can hold themselves. It helps getting them used to different textures. We stopped giving rusks once he had enough iron in his diet from other sources.
